The History of Swear Words Podcast

“The History of Swear Words Podcast” is a Podcast hosted by Commando and Janerio discussing the different perspectives of swear words. Adding knowledge with youthful insight to your favourite words.

Story Pitch

Remember when you were younger and fascinated out what different swear words meant? Our Podcast, “The History of Swear Words”, talks about adult language and adds different perspectives on the subject. We want to better educate everyone on swear words because not only are we uneducated on the topic, but they have a lot of history and meaning that should be known. Some topics that we’ll be focusing on are our life experiences, psychology, history, and the meaning of the words. It is necessary to add that we are no experts on curse words, but we are two young students that are invested in learning about it. Moreover, we hear this type of language every day, so we believe that we should try to educate ourselves and our audience.    

Words have power and some people don’t realize that. In our everyday life, to express our emotions or put emphasis on certain situations, we use cursing as a method of doing so. Those are not the only functions of adult language, there are many more. They have multiple meanings and various interpretations and a large portion of us hear and use this type of profanity daily, but a majority of us are uneducated on the topic. This adds to the significance of learning about it.  A question that we use to help us better understand is what do these words mean and why do we use them. 

If we take a closer look, we can break down and find the semantics and etymology of the curse words we love to use. That’s the main focal point for our Podcast. We feel that this topic stands out from others because profanity is something we hear and use every day, but when was the last time you discussed the meaning and history behind your favourite words? During the Podcast, we provide insight from different angles compared to other Podcasts covering this topic. For example, we provide youthful insight that directly comes from us, real students hosts.

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve discovered some interesting findings in our research. Moreover, we’ve acquired some possible interviewees for our Podcast. Our findings include statistics, sources, loads of facts, and many more surprises. A finding that we have found quite interesting is that we are told that the people we surround ourselves with have a major role in our personalities. If you were to surround yourself with a group of people who curse often, you would most likely curse as well. We, the hosts, see this in our life as well. For instance, the more we hang out with our group of friends, the more we become like them and adapt the same mannerisms and habits. In addition to these findings, we’ve gathered some interviewees composed of friends, family members, and are currently in the process of recruiting some teachers.  The goal for our interviews is to cover as many perspectives that are available to us. 

We’ve known each other for about 10 years now and our choice of language has drastically changed. Especially as we got older we started using grown-up language more often. This is how we got our idea for this Podcast. Ever since we were little, we have been interested in this topic and now we have the opportunity to learn about the different perspectives of swear words. We’ve heard a plethora of curse words over our lifespan from a collection of different sources but never got to learn about these words, just strictly the definitions. Now, the most important thing for us is that not only are we going to learn, but we can share it with you as well.
